Friday 30th January, 2009: Minister Michael Martin officially opened the new Livinghealth Clinic in Mitchelstown, Co Cork. Livinghealth Clinic is a GP led initiative, offering an independent, complete advanced primary care service to the local community as well as providing specialist and ancillary services to the surrounding regions of Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.
The new clinic is based on extensive international experience, site visits, research and an in-depth understanding of the community’s health needs and the greater region’s health care needs and ever changing healthcare technology.
A €10million investment has resulted in a 30,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility, providing a professional, high-quality integrated approach to healthcare on one site.
Livinghealth Clinic was founded and developed by six local General Practitioners: Dr Tom O’Callaghan, Dr Brian Carr, Dr Jack Griffin, Dr Elma Gaffney, Dr Delcan Herlihy and Dr Frank O’Connor.
Having opened its doors last November, the clinic currently employs 40 people including 20 new jobs. This will increase to 80 full and part-time positions once all Hospital consultants and ancillary health care service providers are in place. The Livinghealth Clinic has been a very welcome development in the Mitchelstown area and has met with a wave of good will and support locally, with over 2,500 people attending the community launch in November.
“We are delighted to welcome the Minister and guests to Livinghealth Clinic today. We are very please by the strong sense of community ownership of the Clinic and the many new services it brings. There is also palpable excitement amongst the medical community with both our GP colleagues and hospital consultants who see this model as the way forward for Irish healthcare with better patient outcomes, lower costs and higher levels of patient satisfaction,” said Dr. Tom O’Callaghan, Clinical Director.
“With Phase 1 now fully occupied, we are anticipating a rollout of the second phase over the coming year, further increasing access and service provision for patients in the region. We hope to make Mitchelstown a ‘Health Hub, creating up to 100 further sustainable jobs within the region” added Dr. O’Callaghan.
